The England Senior Men’s team represents all those aspiring golfers of 55 years and older.

Unlike its better-known regular England Men’s side, which has been going since 1932, the Senior Men's side has been going for fewer than 30 years. The side represents England in two major events, the European Team Championships and the Home Internationals.

The European Team Championships normally take place in early September and consist of six players, playing a series of 36-hole qualifying and culminating in match play, singles and foursomes, which hopefully leads to the final.

The Home Internationals are played shortly after the Europeans, normally on a four-year cycle where the event is played at the four home nations. In a recent change, the Senior Women's Home internationals have been incorporated into the event, making this a truly competitive event into a super competitive competition.

Unlike the Europeans, the teams consist of seven women and seven men, with three women’s foursomes and three men’s foursomes played in the morning and six women's and six men's singles played in the afternoon. These matches are played over three days, playing each of the home nations.

So how do you make the side? Over the course of the season, England Golf run an order of merit, which incorporates five 36-hole events, plus the two England Senior Men's championships, the Scottish Open and the Welsh Open plus our premier event, The British Seniors.

How the order of merit works along with the events can be found on the England Golf website. After the last event which is normally the English Senior Men's Amateur Championship, the team is chosen with the top four (five Home Internationals) automatically making the side, with the captain having a further two picks to complete the team.

The present team captain is Andrew Atkinson from Windermere Golf Club. If you have any questions about the events or how the side is picked, please don’t hesitate in contacting him via performance@englandgolf.org.
