What should I know about the team?
The England Senior Women’s team plays in two major events annually, the European Team Championships and the Home internationals.
The European Team Championships takes place in early September and consists of 6 players, playing a 36 hole strokeplay qualifying competition that then moves into knockout matchplay format. England won this event in 2019.
The Home Internationals are played shortly after the European Team Championships, rotating around the 4 home countries on a 4-year cycle. This has recently been combined into a men’s and women’s team. The team consists of 7 women and 7 men, with 3 women’s foursomes and 3 men’s foursomes played in the morning and 6 women’s and 6 men’s singles played in the afternoon. It is a round robin format so we play each country over 3 days.
The historic men’s and women’s Home International trophies are still awarded to the leading country, with a new trophy for the combined team winner. England won in 2021 and retained the women’s trophy in 2022.
Who’s it for?
The England Senior Women’s team is for women aged 50 and over and is your opportunity to represent your country playing golf against other European countries. Whilst we take our competitive golf very seriously, seniors’ golf is also a lot of fun and the atmosphere at the events is enjoyable and sociable.
How do I get involved?
England Golf run an order of merit, consisting of a matchplay championship in May, a strokeplay championship in June and our premier event, the British Seniors in July. Details of the events and how the order of merit works and are on the England Golf website here.
After the final event the team is chosen with 3 picks from the selection committee and the other places being an automatic qualification from the order of merit (top 3 or 4).
The current team captain is Angela Jones. If you have any queries you can contact England Golf or Angela directly via performance@englandgolf.org.
